rPlus Energies’ Groundbreaking Green River Energy Project
Published · 3 min read

rPlus Energies has officially started building the Green River Energy Center in Eastern Utah, marking the launch of a new solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage initiative. This pivotal project incorporates a 400 MW solar PV facility along with a significant 400 MW/1,600 MWh battery storage system. As one of the nation’s largest solar-plus-storage efforts, the Green River Energy Center represents a major step forward towards a sustainable energy future.
By leveraging both solar power and battery storage technologies, the project meets the critical demand for renewable energy sources that can deliver consistent and reliable power under varying conditions. The strategic integration of these technologies not only facilitates energy generation during peak sunlight but also ensures that any excess energy can be stored. Consequently, this stored energy can be used during off-peak hours or cloudier periods, enhancing the system’s efficiency and reliability.
Project Impact and Details
Utah Governor Spencer Cox highlighted the significant impact expected from the Green River Energy Center: “Rural Utahns are building this project in rural Utah, for the benefit of the entire state. When rural Utah thrives, the entire state prospers.” At the recent groundbreaking ceremony, he further emphasized that the project will usher in an era of affordable and plentiful energy across Utah.
Acting as a beacon of progress, the Green River Energy Center promises to revolutionize the perception and use of energy within the state. It aims to spur further renewable energy developments, ensuring that Utah remains competitive and proactive in its approach to sustainable development.
The facility will generate enough electricity to power approximately 88,000 homes. Located strategically near Ferron in Emery County, a site chosen for its high solar potential with roughly 300 sunny days annually, this location maximizes solar output and significantly boosts local economic growth and enhances environmental sustainability.
Economic and Community Benefits
This year, the project secured over $1 billion in construction debt financing, setting the stage to boost Emery County’s economy significantly. It will enhance tax revenues, strengthen public services, and create substantial long-term employment opportunities. During its peak construction phase, the project will create around 500 jobs, and it also plans to maintain a support staff of 15-20 full-time employees annually once operational.
Moreover, the economic impact goes beyond just creating jobs. The arrival of new workers and the development of infrastructure will likely stimulate growth in various sectors, such as retail, housing, and services. This development will provide a crucial economic lift to the rural areas surrounding Ferron, boosting the local economy and enhancing the community’s overall prosperity.
Contributions and Collaborations
Sundt Construction, acting as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor, brings its extensive experience to the forefront of this monumental project. EliTe Solar supplies the solar modules, and Tesla adds its expertise with the cutting-edge Megapack battery storage solution.
Luigi Resta, President and CEO of rPlus Energies, actively praises the collaborative effort. “The partners really make this project special; they have made this monumental project possible,” he states. “We owe the success of this project to everyone from our equipment providers to the onsite talent, and also to the support of the local and regional community.” Resta highlights the role of innovative partnerships, which are crucial in overcoming the technical and logistical challenges often associated with large-scale renewable projects.
Looking Ahead
The Green River Energy Center extends beyond local or state boundaries, influencing the broader PacifiCorp network across six Western states. This clean energy expansion plays a crucial role by diversifying Utah’s energy mix and setting a benchmark for future regional projects.
Looking to the future, the broader implications of the project significantly impact both environmental and economic aspects, placing Utah at the leading edge of the renewable energy sector. The project actively supports Utah’s long-term energy sustainability objectives, maintaining the state’s leadership in green energy innovation.
