Mexico is experiencing extreme heatwaves, leading to record-high electricity consumption. On May 27, 2025, the national grid operator, CENACE, recorded a peak demand of 51,595 megawatts. This surge in demand has overwhelmed the aging infrastructure, resulting in widespread power outages across the country.

Several factors contribute to this crisis:

  • High temperatures increase the use of air conditioning and cooling systems.
  • Water shortages reduce the efficiency of hydroelectric plants.
  • Underinvestment in renewable energy sources limits alternative power options.

Impact on Daily Life

The power outages have affected various aspects of daily life:

  • Households face interruptions in cooling, lighting, and appliance usage.
  • Businesses experience operational disruptions, leading to economic losses.
  • Healthcare facilities struggle to maintain essential services.

These challenges highlight the urgent need for sustainable and reliable energy solutions.

Peru’s Geothermal Initiative

Peru offers a promising example of harnessing geothermal energy. The Tutupaca Geothermal Zone in the Tacna region has been identified as a significant source of renewable energy. Studies by the Geological, Mining, and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET) reveal that the area has a geothermal potential of up to 2,860 megawatts

Key features of the Tutupaca project include:

  • Three volcanic formations: Tutupaca Basal, Tutupaca Oeste, and Tutupaca Reciente.
  • High-temperature reservoirs suitable for electricity generation.
  • Potential to power approximately 287,000 to 884,000 homes.

This initiative demonstrates the viability of geothermal energy as a clean and constant power source.

Mexico’s Geothermal Potential

Mexico, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, possesses substantial geothermal resources. Currently, the country has an installed geothermal capacity of around 1,000 megawatts, accounting for about 2% of its national energy production. However, estimates suggest that Mexico’s geothermal potential could exceed 13,000 megawatts

Advantages of geothermal energy include:

  • Renewability: It is a sustainable and inexhaustible energy source.
  • Reliability: Unlike solar or wind, geothermal energy provides a constant power supply.
  • Environmental benefits: It produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its potential, Mexico faces several challenges in expanding geothermal energy:

  • Technical hurdles: Developing geothermal plants requires advanced technology and expertise.
  • Financial constraints: High initial investment costs can deter development.
  • Regulatory barriers: Complex permitting processes can delay projects.

Addressing these challenges involves:

  • Policy reforms to streamline regulatory procedures.
  • Investment incentives to attract private sector participation.
  • International collaboration to share knowledge and best practices.

Conclusion

Mexico’s current energy crisis underscores the need for sustainable and reliable power sources. Geothermal energy presents a viable solution, offering constant and clean electricity. By learning from Peru’s Tutupaca project and investing in geothermal development, Mexico can enhance its energy security and resilience against climate-induced challenges.
