Japan’s Renewed Energy Strategy: Embracing Nuclear and Renewables

In a major change, Japan has shared a new plan to change its energy policy. This plan focuses a lot on nuclear power and renewable energy. The goal is to help the environment, use less oil and gas, and make sure Japan has enough energy even if there are problems in other parts of the world.

Understanding Japan’s Energy Use

Japan uses a lot of coal and natural gas, which are not good for our planet. Right now, coal is used for 32% of Japan’s electricity, which is a lot more than what other rich countries use. Only 12% of Japan’s electricity comes from renewable sources like wind and solar. This is much less than in places like the European Union, where renewables make up about 27%.

New Goals for Energy

Japan wants to use more renewable energy. By the year 2040, they plan to have about 40% to 50% of their electricity come from renewable sources. They also want to use more nuclear power, which will make up about 20% of their energy. This is a big change from the past years when Japan tried to use less nuclear power because of the big accident at Fukushima in 2011.

Why Nuclear Power?

Nuclear energy used to be a big part of how Japan got its electricity. But after the accident in Fukushima, all the nuclear plants were stopped. Now, Japan wants to use nuclear power again because it doesn’t produce gases that heat up our planet. They are even thinking about building new nuclear plants.

Increasing Renewable Energy

Japan also wants to use more renewable energy like solar and wind. They are trying to figure out how to use their land better because Japan has a lot of mountains and it’s hard to find places for big solar farms.

Why This Plan?

Japan’s new energy plan is not just about using different kinds of energy. It’s also about making sure that Japan does not have to rely too much on oil and gas from other countries, especially because there are a lot of problems in the world like wars.

What This Means for Japan and the World

  • This plan can help Japan’s economy grow because companies that need a lot of energy, like those that make computer chips, will like stable and clean energy.
  • It also helps the whole world because Japan is trying to pollute less. Japan is one of the top five countries that produce the most pollution from gases that cause global warming.

Here’s a quick look at how the numbers have changed:

Japan’s new strategy shows it wants to be a leader in using clean energy. This will help the planet and make sure Japan has enough energy for its people and businesses. Japan’s plan is a big step in fighting against climate change and making a better future for all of us.
