Itochu to Launch $500 Million Fund for North American Renewable Energy Ventures
Published · 3 min read

In a strategic move to capitalize on the surging demand for renewable energy projects in North America, Itochu, a leading Japanese trading house, and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank have announced the launch of a groundbreaking fund with a potential value of up to $500 million. This joint initiative is driven by the anticipation of substantial subsidies from the U.S. government, which are set to catalyze new solar, wind, and alternative energy ventures across the continent.
The newly established fund is slated to channel investments into a diverse portfolio of renewable energy projects, encompassing solar and wind power generation and projects focused on harnessing the potential of hydrogen and ammonia as clean energy sources. Itochu will spearhead the fund’s establishment through a management company under its U.S. subsidiary, leveraging its extensive experience and expertise in energy trading.
As the bedrock of this venture, Itochu and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank will each contribute $50 million. Accompanying this capital injection, real estate powerhouse Tokyu Land Corp. and Fuyo General Lease will also invest a combined total of $40 million, signaling strong backing from diverse sectors of the industry. Additionally, the fund is set to reach its pinnacle through further contributions from Japanese enterprises and regional banks, with a target of amassing a maximum investable capital of $500 million by June of next year.
With a focus on minimizing risk exposure, the fund intends to funnel resources into five to ten renewable energy projects over a span of three years, allocating an average investment ranging from $50 million to $100 million per project. A primary emphasis will be placed on operational and construction-stage projects, which are deemed to carry a lower level of inherent risk.
The backdrop to this venture is a shifting landscape in the United States energy sector. Recent data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration reveals that solar and wind power contributed 14% of total power generation in the country last year. This share is projected to surge to nearly 20% by 2024, propelled by a slew of government incentives following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022.
Under this act’s provisions, President Joe Biden’s administration has earmarked a staggering $160 billion in tax credits to incentivize renewable energy enterprises. Capitalizing on this momentum, the collaborative consortium from Japan aims to tap into the burgeoning demand for energy solutions powered by sustainable sources.
Itochu has already demonstrated its commitment to the renewable energy landscape, having invested in over 20 solar and wind projects in North America through its subsidiary, Tyr Energy. Drawing on its wealth of operational insights, the trading giant will spearhead the selection of potential investment targets, leveraging its industry know-how to elevate the value of its backed projects.
For Japan, the domestic landscape for solar and onshore wind power projects is becoming increasingly constrained, with fewer large-scale opportunities on the horizon. Conversely, the United States market focuses on ambitious projects, coupled with substantial financial backing from the government and elevated electricity prices – factors that offer a fertile ground for robust returns on investment.
Intriguingly, Japan’s average return on solar power ventures hovers around 2% to 3%, whereas their North American counterparts can yield returns ranging from 7% to 9%. Similarly, the returns on wind power projects in Japan stand at approximately 5% to 6%, while the North American market showcases potential returns of 8% to 10% or more.
As the global drive towards sustainability and reduced carbon emissions gathers momentum, Itochu and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank’s ambitious $500 million fund for North American renewable energy ventures positions them as trailblazers in the transition to a greener energy landscape. With calculated investments in projects set to underpin North America’s renewable energy revolution, this collaborative initiative is poised to leave an indelible mark on the trajectory of the energy industry.
