In a significant leap towards a sustainable future, Estonia has achieved a new milestone in the field of hydrogen energy. The country celebrated the successful test charging of a GE C30 locomotive battery using COOLERGIZER, a cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell-based mobile charger developed by European firm COOLERGY. This event not only marks a major achievement but also signals the potential for cleaner energy solutions across various modes of transportation.

What Happened in Tapa?

The demonstration took place at the Tapa Depot, a key location in Estonia’s railway network. Here, Operail, an Estonian railway operator, showcased how the COOLERGIZER can power the batteries of the GE C30 locomotive, a widely used model in railways.

Technical Specifications and Benefits of COOLERGIZER

The COOLERGIZER is no ordinary charger. It is a robust device capable of generating up to 80 kW of power and supporting a wide range of voltages from 27 to 380 V. This flexibility allows it to charge not just locomotives but also planes, yachts, and cars, making it a versatile tool in the push for greener energy sources.

Demonstrations Spread Across the Baltics

This successful test in Tapa is part of a larger initiative known as the “Great Hydrogen Voyage,” which features a series of hydrogen charging demonstrations across the Baltic region. The journey includes stops in major cities from Tallinn to Madrid, showcasing the capabilities of hydrogen power in various transportation sectors.

Kirill Lyats, CEO of COOLERGY, expressed his excitement about the project: “This test in Tapa is a significant step forward. Our goal is to show that hydrogen can power almost all main types of transport. We’ve charged cars, yachts, planes, and now a locomotive, demonstrating the broad potential of the COOLERGIZER.”

Future Plans and Environmental Impact

COOLERGY is not stopping here. The company has ambitious plans to continue expanding the use of hydrogen power. In the coming months, Tapa will witness the first test runs of the TGM 4 H2 hydrogen locomotive, which will be powered by two COOLERGIZER units. This locomotive is expected to achieve a peak output of 500 kW, showcasing the high performance that can be achieved with hydrogen fuel cells.

Hydrogen fuel, unlike fossil fuels, produces water instead of harmful gases when used for energy. This makes it a clean and attractive option for reducing pollution and fighting climate change.

COOLERGY’s Commitment to Sustainability

Established in 2023, COOLERGY is at the forefront of developing liquid hydrogen solutions. The company not only designs and constructs cryogenic plants but also focuses on producing, storing, and transporting hydrogen in a way that supports sustainable energy practices. Their initiatives include building hydrogen production facilities that utilize renewable energy sources, thereby minimizing environmental impact.
