Google and Intersect Power Forge Ahead with Clean Energy Initiatives
Published · 2 min read

Google has entered a groundbreaking partnership with Intersect Power to buy power for its forthcoming data centers, which will be situated next to facilities that generate clean energy. This ambitious project, worth around $20 billion, marks a significant step towards sustainability for the tech giant.
Strategic Elements of the Partnership
Google plans to be a key customer for Intersect Power’s new clean energy projects. This partnership will support the construction of data centers in industrial parks that focus on using renewable energy.
Intersect Power currently manages 2.2 gigawatts (GW) of solar power and 2.4 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery storage. With new projects on the horizon, they expect to start construction on an additional 4 GW of solar and 10 GWh of battery storage in the upcoming year.
The Wide-Ranging Benefits of Energy Parks
- Grid services: Large energy parks can act like microgrids, providing reliable energy over a broad area.
- Economic growth: These parks help local economies by using tax credits and saving money on equipment.
- Quick access to power: Data centers can start using energy faster than if they waited for new grid connections.
These parks, however, must navigate complex regulations, especially about the charges for energy use and how they connect to the power grid.
Google’s Commitment to Green Energy Amidst Regulatory Challenges
Google’s president, Ruth Porat, has highlighted issues with the U.S. electricity grid, which has lagged behind the growing demands of the economy. The partnership aims to overcome these challenges by developing industrial parks that use clean energy, which will also host Google’s data centers.
This new initiative not only seeks to reduce Google’s carbon footprint but also to streamline the process of bringing new data centers online. The initial phase of the first energy project is set to be operational by 2026 and fully complete by 2027.
Jim Coulter, Executive Chairman of TPG and Managing Partner of TPG Rise Climate, emphasized the unique opportunity created by the convergence of decarbonization and digitization, aiming to develop carbon-free data centers that are both economical and scalable.
A Blueprint for Future Digital and Power Integration
The collaboration between Google, Intersect Power, and TPG Rise Climate represents a strategic alignment of digital infrastructure with clean energy production. This model promotes environmental responsibility and ensures robust economic growth by harnessing the capabilities of AI and other advanced digital services.
Targeted initially at the U.S. market, this strategy is expected to expand globally, potentially setting a new standard for the integration of digital infrastructure and renewable energy.
Anticipating the Impact
The technology and sustainability sectors are keenly watching this project as it unfolds. With substantial investments and strong strategic alliances, Google, Intersect Power, and their partners are poised to establish a new paradigm in the integration of clean energy with data center operations.
These efforts reflect a broader movement towards sustainable development in the tech industry, driven by the need to address both environmental concerns and the increasing energy demands of global digital infrastructure.
