Entergy Starts $270 Million Jefferson Parish Grid Hardening Project

Entergy Louisiana has begun a $270 million Jefferson Parish grid-hardening project that will reinforce thousands of poles and hundreds of miles of infrastructure against hurricane-force winds.

Entergy Louisiana began a $270 million Jefferson Parish grid hardening project this week, expanding work to strengthen electric infrastructure across the southeast Louisiana parish against hurricanes and other severe weather. The utility marked the latest construction phase on Aug. 13, 2026, as crews continued replacing and reinforcing poles and other equipment, including work along Veterans Boulevard.

The program calls for roughly 8,400 distribution and transmission poles to be replaced or reinforced across Jefferson Parish, with upgraded structures designed to withstand winds of up to 140 mph. More than 500 poles and related pieces of electrical infrastructure are already being addressed along a section of Veterans Boulevard, according to reporting published Aug. 14.

The work targets infrastructure vulnerable to major storms

The new construction is part of Entergy Louisiana’s broader effort to reduce the damage and lengthy outages that can follow hurricanes and other extreme weather events. New Orleans CityBusiness reported that the current Jefferson Parish investment covers hundreds of miles of electrical infrastructure and is intended to improve both reliability and post-storm restoration.

Work underway between the Orleans Parish line and Clearview Parkway includes replacing or strengthening more than 500 utility poles and associated equipment. That portion is expected to be completed by October, although weather and construction conditions could affect the schedule.

The investment builds on a resilience program Entergy Louisiana formally launched in Jefferson Parish in 2024. At that time, the utility said its broader program would target infrastructure identified as particularly vulnerable to major storms and would prioritize projects expected to produce significant reliability benefits.

Entergy is designing new poles for stronger winds

A central component of the Jefferson Parish grid hardening effort is replacing or reinforcing poles with structures engineered to withstand winds of up to 140 mph.

Hardening distribution infrastructure does not eliminate the possibility of storm outages. Trees, flooding, windborne debris, equipment failures and damage elsewhere on interconnected transmission and distribution systems can still interrupt service. Stronger structures can, however, reduce the amount of physical infrastructure that must be rebuilt after a major event.

Entergy has previously described its resilience strategy as a way to reduce both storm damage and restoration costs. An official Entergy Louisiana announcement said the company used storm modeling and infrastructure analysis to identify projects where strengthening the system could improve recovery following major weather events.

Jefferson Parish has already been a focus of resilience investment

The parish has been receiving both distribution and transmission upgrades as part of Entergy’s longer-term resilience strategy.

In February 2025, the utility completed transmission upgrades in Metairie that replaced wooden structures inside a major substation with single-pole steel structures rated for 150 mph winds. Entergy described that project as the beginning of the transmission component of its broader resilience program.

Jefferson Parish has also been included in federally supported resilience planning. Entergy previously announced a $27 million project associated with federal funding that would harden more than 20 miles of power lines and benefit more than 10,500 residences along with businesses and critical facilities.

The utility estimated that particular project could prevent more than eight million hours of power interruptions and approximately $165 million in restoration costs over 50 years. Those estimates apply to the federally supported project and should not be interpreted as the projected benefits of the entire $270 million program.

Grid hardening has economic as well as reliability implications

Jefferson Parish includes health care facilities, commercial districts, supply-chain operations and other businesses that depend on reliable electricity. Extended outages can therefore create effects well beyond residential inconvenience.

Entergy says its broader resilience program could avoid approximately $175 million in future storm restoration costs and generate roughly $5 billion in capital maintenance and investment benefits over 50 years through fewer emergency repairs, equipment failures and premature replacements. Those are company projections rather than guaranteed savings.

The resilience investment is particularly relevant in southeast Louisiana, where hurricanes have repeatedly damaged electric infrastructure and required large-scale rebuilding efforts.

The project will continue in phases

Construction across Jefferson Parish is expected to proceed in phases. Work along Veterans Boulevard may create temporary traffic impacts, while some customers could experience planned outages when crews need to de-energize equipment to complete upgrades safely.

Entergy says customers affected by planned outages will receive advance notification.

The immediate milestone is completion of the current Veterans Boulevard work, targeted for October. The larger program will continue beyond that corridor as Entergy replaces and reinforces thousands of structures across the parish.

The scale of the project illustrates how utility resilience planning is shifting from post-disaster rebuilding toward pre-storm infrastructure investment. Whether the full program delivers its projected savings will ultimately depend on future storm exposure and system performance, but the physical objective is straightforward: reduce the amount of infrastructure that fails when severe weather reaches Jefferson Parish.
