Microgrid Media is an independent energy industry publication covering microgrids, distributed energy resources, energy storage, data center power, grid modernization, resilience, renewable energy, and energy policy and markets.
Our goal is to provide accurate, timely and useful reporting about the technologies, projects, companies, policies and markets shaping the power sector.
Credibility is fundamental to that mission.
The standards below govern how Microgrid Media researches, produces, reviews, labels, updates and corrects its editorial content.
We aim to publish information that is accurate, properly attributed and supported by reliable evidence.
Before publication, material factual claims should be supported by one or more credible sources appropriate to the subject. Depending on the story, those sources may include government records, regulatory filings, utility documents, company disclosures, project documentation, research, technical reports, interviews or other independently verifiable information.
Speed does not override accuracy.
When a fact cannot be sufficiently verified, we may omit it, qualify it or make clear what remains unknown.
We distinguish between:
Headlines, excerpts and social-media descriptions should accurately represent the underlying reporting and should not exaggerate what the available evidence establishes.
Microgrid Media prioritizes primary and authoritative sources whenever practical.
These can include regulatory filings, government records, utility documents, public-company filings, court records, permitting documents, research institutions, technical reports, project documentation and statements from organizations directly involved in a development.
Secondary reporting may provide useful context or identify developments that warrant further reporting, but significant factual claims should be traced as close as reasonably possible to their original source.
Where primary documentation is publicly available and useful to readers, we seek to link to it.
A source’s authority, proximity to the information, potential interests and ability to substantiate a claim are considered when evaluating evidence.
Press releases, corporate newsrooms and official announcements are valuable sources of timely information, particularly for project launches, transactions, partnerships, contracts and technology developments.
They are not automatically treated as independent verification of every claim they contain.
When reporting from company announcements, Microgrid Media seeks to distinguish factual information from promotional statements, projections and marketing language.
Claims such as being the “largest,” “first,” “most advanced,” “lowest cost” or similar superlatives should be independently supportable or clearly attributed to the organization making the claim.
When an article materially relies on a company announcement, readers should be able to understand where that information originated.
Microgrid Media attributes information to its source whenever attribution improves transparency or is necessary for readers to evaluate a claim.
We generally link to relevant source material when it is publicly accessible, including regulatory documents, government announcements, official project information, research and other credible references.
Links are selected for their relevance and informational value. The presence of a link does not constitute an endorsement of the organization, product or viewpoint associated with that website.
We do not knowingly present another publication’s original reporting as our own.
When another newsroom breaks a story or provides material original reporting that we rely upon, that contribution should be appropriately credited.
Direct quotations must accurately reflect what a source said or what appears in the underlying source material.
We do not fabricate, reconstruct or materially alter quotations.
Minor editing may be used where appropriate for clarity, such as removing verbal fillers from an interview, provided the meaning is not changed.
Quotes taken from written statements, regulatory proceedings, public meetings, earnings calls, press releases or other published material should be attributed accordingly.
AI-generated or invented quotations are prohibited.
Microgrid Media generally prefers attributable sources.
Anonymous sourcing may occasionally be appropriate when information is newsworthy, the source is in a position to know the information and there is a legitimate reason the person’s identity cannot be disclosed.
Information from anonymous sources should receive heightened scrutiny and should be corroborated where practical.
Anonymity should not be granted merely to allow someone to make unsupported attacks, promotional claims or speculation without accountability.
Readers should be able to understand what kind of content they are reading.
News reporting focuses on verified developments and provides relevant context without advocating for a predetermined conclusion.
Analysis may interpret developments, data, technologies or market trends while remaining grounded in evidence. Analysis should distinguish established facts from interpretation.
Opinion, commentary and contributed viewpoints may express conclusions or recommendations that are not the institutional position of Microgrid Media.
Opinion content should be clearly identifiable as such.
When Microgrid Media publishes a press release substantially in the form supplied by an outside organization, it should be clearly labeled Press Release.
Press releases are not independent reporting by the Microgrid Media newsroom.
Content created or published as part of a paid commercial arrangement should be clearly labeled Sponsored, Sponsored Content, Partner Content, Paid Content or another disclosure that clearly communicates the commercial relationship.
Sponsored content should not be presented in a way that causes a reasonable reader to believe it is independent newsroom reporting.
Editorial decisions are based on newsworthiness, relevance, evidence and value to Microgrid Media readers.
Advertisers, sponsors, technology vendors, project developers or other commercial partners do not determine the conclusions of independent editorial coverage.
A commercial relationship with Microgrid Media or its publisher does not guarantee favorable editorial coverage.
Similarly, purchasing advertising, sponsored content or another commercial service does not provide a client with the right to alter unrelated independent journalism.
The newsroom and commercial functions may operate within the same publishing organization, but commercial considerations should not override editorial standards.
Writers, editors and contributors should avoid financial or personal conflicts that could materially compromise—or reasonably appear to compromise—the independence of their work.
Relevant financial relationships, employment relationships, consulting roles, investments, sponsorships or other material affiliations should be disclosed when they are directly relevant to published content.
Contributors submitting opinion or expert commentary are expected to disclose material affiliations related to the subject they are discussing.
Microgrid Media may decline, edit or add disclosures to contributed content when a conflict could affect how readers evaluate the material.
Microgrid Media may use artificial intelligence and other technology-assisted tools within portions of its editorial workflow.
These tools may assist with tasks such as organizing research, reviewing source materials, transcription, summarization, drafting assistance, data processing, SEO preparation, formatting, taxonomy, quality-control checks and other newsroom operations.
Our use of AI is governed by several principles:
Editorial responsibility for published content remains with Microgrid Media.
Automated tools may support editorial judgment but do not replace our standards for accuracy, sourcing, attribution and transparency.
When AI-generated or AI-modified media could reasonably cause readers to mistake a synthetic representation for documentary evidence of a real event, appropriate disclosure should accompany it.
Images published by Microgrid Media should be relevant to the story and used in accordance with applicable permissions, licenses or other lawful editorial-use principles.
Whenever possible, we prioritize imagery from sources such as official project or company media libraries, government agencies, public-domain collections, properly licensed repositories and other identifiable sources.
Photo credits and source information should be provided where required or editorially appropriate.
Captions should accurately describe what an image depicts.
We avoid captions or image presentations that imply an image documents a specific event when it is actually illustrative.
Editorial illustrations, conceptual imagery and AI-generated visuals should not be presented as documentary photographs of events that did not occur.
Energy reporting frequently involves capacity, generation, storage duration, costs, emissions, load forecasts and other technical measurements.
Microgrid Media seeks to preserve important distinctions between units and concepts, including MW and MWh, capacity and generation, announced investment and committed expenditure, and projected demand and measured demand.
Technical numbers should be attributed to their underlying source when material to the story.
Conversions or calculations performed by Microgrid Media should be checked for consistency and should not create a level of precision unsupported by the original data.
Forecasts, modeling results and estimates should be identified as such.
Microgrid Media may optimize headlines, descriptions and article structure to make journalism easier to discover through search engines, news platforms and other distribution channels.
Search optimization does not justify misleading readers.
SEO titles, primary keywords, excerpts and metadata should remain consistent with the facts and central subject of the article.
We do not intentionally use headlines that materially exaggerate, distort or misrepresent the story simply to attract clicks.
Microgrid Media does not knowingly publish plagiarized work.
Original reporting, analysis and explanatory journalism should use independent language and provide attribution where ideas, reporting or quotations originate elsewhere.
Material taken from outside sources should not be copied beyond what is reasonably necessary for quotation, attribution, analysis or other legitimate editorial use.
Contributed work must also meet these standards.
Accuracy obligations continue after publication.
When Microgrid Media becomes aware of a material factual error, we seek to verify the issue and correct the article when appropriate.
Depending on the nature of the change, an article may receive a correction note, clarification or update explaining what was changed.
Minor corrections involving spelling, grammar, formatting or other changes that do not materially affect the meaning of the story may be made without a formal correction notice.
We do not remove accurate published information merely because a person or organization later finds it unfavorable.
Requests for corrections should identify the article, disputed statement and supporting evidence whenever possible.
Correction requests may be sent to: editor@microgridmedia.com
Microgrid Media maintains a separate Corrections Policy with additional information about how correction requests are handled.
Articles may be updated as additional verified information becomes available.
Material updates should preserve the accuracy of the original reporting while clearly incorporating newer information.
When a significant development materially changes the meaning of an article, we may include an update note or otherwise indicate that the story has been substantially revised.
The publication date should not be misleadingly changed simply to make old reporting appear new.
Microgrid Media may publish contributed analysis, commentary or expert perspectives from people outside the newsroom.
Acceptance of contributed material is an editorial decision and does not guarantee publication.
Contributors are expected to disclose relevant affiliations and conflicts of interest and to substantiate factual claims.
Contributed material may be edited for accuracy, clarity, length, style and legal or editorial considerations.
The opinions of outside contributors do not necessarily represent the views of Microgrid Media, its editors or its publisher.
Editorial submissions may be made through our Submit a Story page.
Microgrid Media covers companies and organizations across industries in which it may also have advertisers, sponsors or commercial partners.
The existence of a commercial relationship does not prevent legitimate editorial coverage of an organization, nor does it guarantee that coverage will be positive.
When an article itself is part of a paid arrangement, that relationship should be disclosed through appropriate labeling.
Readers should never be required to infer whether editorial-looking content has been purchased.
For commercial inquiries, visit our Advertise page.
When reporting contains significant criticism, allegations or disputed claims about an identifiable person or organization, Microgrid Media seeks appropriate context and, when warranted, an opportunity for the affected party to respond.
A lack of response does not necessarily prevent publication when the underlying information is sufficiently verified.
Responses received after publication may be incorporated when they materially add to or clarify the record.
Sources do not receive control over independent editorial content simply because they supplied information.
Where appropriate, Microgrid Media may verify technical details, quotations or factual information with a source before publication. This does not give the source the right to rewrite an article, remove unfavorable but accurate information or determine the story’s conclusions.
Embargoes may be honored when explicitly agreed to in advance.
Information sent unsolicited to Microgrid Media should not automatically be assumed to be subject to an embargo.
Microgrid Media is responsible for the journalism published under its name.
Our editorial standards are designed to evolve as our newsroom, technology and coverage develop.
We may revise this policy periodically to reflect changes in newsroom practices, technology, industry standards or applicable requirements.
Questions about this policy may be directed to: editor@microgridmedia.com
