Edisun Raises CHF 16.2 Million for Solar Projects to Power Data Centres

Swiss solar producer Edisun Power Europe AG (SWX: ESUN) has succeeded in raising CHF 16.2 million through a bond issuance. The cash will help the company build and support renewable energy projects aimed at supplying data centres.

Originally, the firm planned a CHF 10 million bond. But because interest was strong, Edisun decided to increase it by CHF 6.2 million. The bond carries an interest (coupon) rate of 3.5%.

Where the Money Will Go

Part of the funds will refinance existing debt. The rest will support development on new solar projects. Among them is the flagship “Fuencarral to AI” project near Madrid.

Edisun says development for Fuencarral is nearly complete, and the company is about to move into construction. But instead of building everything itself, Edisun has started a tender to sell the project. The winning buyer will take on the construction costs.

About the Fuencarral to AI Project

This is a large solar facility with a planned capacity of 941 MWp. It aims to supply clean power to data centres, especially in Madrid.

It comprises three sub-projects: Pradillos (~390 MW), Fuencarral (~291 MW), and Loeches (~260 MW). The spread helps ensure space and grid efficiency.

Notably, of the 941 MWp, about 362 MW will be directly designated for data centres.

Edisun has already secured many approvals: grid connections, environmental clearances, and construction permits. It is also acquiring extra development rights from partner firms.

Why Data Centres and AI Matter Here

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud services demand huge power. Data centres run non-stop, so they need reliable energy. Edisun’s strategy links its solar power to these energy needs.

In Spain, data centres must use a certain share of renewable energy at their connection point. This rule is meant to keep the power grid stable and green.

So Edisun is trying something smart: co-locate generation (solar) and consumption (data centre) near each other. That can ease grid stress and improve energy use.

Financial Picture & Risks

The bond raise being oversubscribed shows investor confidence in Edisun’s green goals.

Yet the company’s recent results have had struggles. In 2025’s first half, Edisun recorded a net loss of CHF 2.97 million. That compares with a loss of CHF 1.25 million in the same period in 2024.

Revenues also fell. Production was lower in parts of Spain and Portugal due to bad weather. Tariff changes in Germany and Italy also weighed down earnings.

Edisun sold 159 MW of its Italian project portfolio to help raise funds for its major Spanish project.

Challenges & Prospects

Edisun faces challenges. It must find a buyer willing to invest in construction. It must manage cost and execution risk. Weather, tariffs, and grid permits can all work against it.

Still, if Fuencarral succeeds, it could become a major source of clean power for AI systems. The company’s “Renewables to AI” strategy bets on this demand.
